Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure that uses sound waves to generate an image. When you’re pregnant, the ultrasound not only lets you see your baby, but allows the doctor to evaluate the health of your growing baby, including a look at the limbs, brain, and heart.

Ultrasounds are considered a very safe procedure for pregnant women.

What is a 3D/4D ultrasound?

A 3D ultrasound provides a still image of your baby, while the 4D ultrasound gives you a video.

A 3D ultrasound provides a very clear image of your baby because it focuses on creating a picture using the skin. The traditional 2D ultrasound creates images of the internal organs, so you only see the outline of your baby, not the details. With a 3D image, you see all the details of your baby’s face and body.

A 4D ultrasound creates a video of the 3D image so you see your baby in motion; stretching, sucking on fingers, or moving about.

Like traditional ultrasounds, both the 3D and 4D ultrasounds are safe for pregnant women.

At what stage of the pregnancy can I get an ultrasound?

The team at Nature Coast Healthcare Center recommends you come in for at least two ultrasounds during your pregnancy.

The team schedules your first ultrasound at 18 weeks to assess your baby’s heart. The second ultrasound occurs at week 34 to measure your baby’s size.

Both 3D and 4D ultrasounds are optional. If you decide you’d like a clear image of your baby, the team schedules these ultrasounds between weeks 24 and 30 for the best images.

For what other reason may I need an ultrasound?

You may need an ultrasound at another point in your life other than pregnancy. Ultrasounds are used to detect:

  • Fibroids
  • Cysts on your ovaries

The doctors at Nature Coast Healthcare Center may recommend a vaginal ultrasound, which is an ultrasound that uses a special wand shaped to fit in your vagina and create images of your pelvic area.

The team at Nature Coast Healthcare Center may also recommend an ultrasound to get a better look at your internal organs such as your uterus, ovaries, gallbladder, stomach, heart, liver, or kidneys.
