Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT is a treatment that is given to menopausal women to help relieve the symptoms of menopause. Menopause is a shifting or change within a woman's body that moves them from childbearing to non-childbearing. This is usually age-related, though there are some premature cases of menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy provides substitute hormones to replace the natural decrease in hormone production as a woman's body goes through menopause. The goal is to reduce or alleviate the symptoms associated with hormone loss.

How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?

Hormone replacement uses estrogen and progesterone in small doses to increase the level of these female hormones in the woman's blood stream. Once there, the cells that need and rely on hormones to function have an access to those hormones. The result is that the symptoms described above decrease and become more manageable.

Menopause is a good example of why hormone replacement therapy is important. When diagnosed early, the symptoms of menopause are easier to manage. What that means for women is that the sudden decrease in female hormones becomes avoidable and symptoms that would be considered manic become calmer and more tolerable. The trick is early detection so be sure to discuss any menopausal symptoms that you might have with Dr. Okorjori. The reason this is important is many of these symptoms may also be signs of other medical issues.

Can I Take Hormone Supplements?

There are versions of hormones available as supplements but those should be avoided. At best you should talk with your doctor about using potential OTC - over the counter medication. Hormones are extremely powerful and how they react in your body is something that should be monitored by a doctor. If you are interested in a more holistic approach to treating hormone-related health problems then talk with Dr. Okorjoi about the options available to you. His goal is always that your medical pathway is safe, comfortable, and something with which you agree.
